Event Overview
Explore the transformation of Bainbridge Island’s historic site from an environmental Superfund project to a symbol of healing and remembrance at Pritchard Park, now home to the Bainbridge Island WWII Nikkei Exclusion Memorial. Once the site of a major creosote plant, this area was reclaimed as a regional park in honor of U.S. Representative Joel Pritchard, blending the natural beauty of Eagle Harbor with the powerful story of the Japanese American community’s resilience.
Free guided group tours are available to illuminate both the environmental restoration and the legacy of Bainbridge Islanders unjustly removed during WWII.
Dedicated to “Nidoto Nai Yoni” (Let It Not Happen Again), the Memorial at Pritchard Park includes thoughtful installations, such as the historic Departure Deck and Story Wall, serving as a poignant reminder of this chapter in American history. Experience the storytelling embedded in each element of the site, created through collaborative efforts among the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community, local government, and private donors. Join a tour to connect with the ongoing legacy of this place, shaped by decades of community dedication and care.
