Local Immigrant Population*

2000

*Immigrant Population is an estimated sum of the number of naturalized Americans from this country and citizens from this country living in the Seattle Metro Area under any sort of immigration visa.  It does not count the American offspring or descendants of immigrants from this country, which can go back many generations and account for large numbers of people.  1,000 is the default number when we don’t have a better count.

Languages:

Belarusian and Russian are the official languages.

Notes:

It is difficult to document the history of immigration of people from Belarus because the country only became independent in 1991.  There are reports of Belarusian communities with a long heritage in the Northeastern US, but the country is so young that there are no records.  People who came here from Belarus before 1991 were counted as Russians.

Apart from a relatively active local Belarusian group on Facebook, there is little evidence of a prominent Belarusian culture per se in Seattle.  Perhaps they have lacked sufficient numbers or time to organize their own social and cultural institutions here.  It may be possible to meet people from Belarus at various local Orthodox churches, but these are not distinct to Belarusians.  At least one church in WA state has sent missions to Belarus.

We are still looking for a restaurant serving authentic machanka, vereshchaka, draniki, kolduny, kletski, or babka in Seattle.  More research is needed to track down a Belarusian authority in Seattle.

Why does Seattle need this directory?

1

Covid has ruined the travel plans of so many people.  Maybe you are one of them.  Family trips, honeymoons, first time overseas trips postponed and cancelled.  Please explore this directory to create your own Round-the-World experience without traveling far from Seattle.

2

Believe it or not, in 2022, New York City passed a law granting non-US citizens the right to vote in certain local and municipal elections.  Will Seattle follow NYC?  Time will tell.  If that comes to be, then this directory should be indispensable.  Let us know what you think.
